Nick Piesen looked good in shooting a 74 on Tuesday.

In one of the most competitive fields they've seen this season, the Saint Ignatius Varsity Blue squad fought hard but came up just short.

Against top competition from across the state, the Wildcats lost the Pickerington North Invitational by a single stroke to Dublin Jerome on Tuesday.

Still, second place isn't bad when you're going up against the best in the state, especially when you shoot 293 as a team.

Topher Reed led the Wildcats at Jefferson Country Club. The junior tallied an impressive 71, providing an anchor point for the Cats.

Connor Malicki continued his outstanding sophomore season in Columbus. The Avon native marked down a 73 at day's end for the men of PJ Myers '99.

Nick Piesen played wonderfully in a bounceback effort on Tuesday. The sophomore snagged a 74 for the day, representing the Clevelanders well.

Sean Hoagland rounded out the Wildcats' scores with a mark of 75. Bradley Chill, Jr. also competed, chipping in a 77.

While the prestigious Kiely Cup has been cancelled, the Wildcats have picked up a couple tournaments, including the Archbishop Hoban Invitational on September 8 and the Bishop Alter Invitational on September 14.

Beach's boys thrive

At the Lake Blue Streak Invitational on Monday, the men of Tom Beach turned in a nice team score of 319, tying for second place.

All six Wildcats turned in good scores, but Nick Longano stood out above the pack. The senior heated up on the back nine for a score of 33, completing an 18-hole score of 73.

Fellow senior Liam Doyel followed his lead with a nice tally of 79. Andrew Martin also did solidly, marking down an 83 at Congress Lake. Michael O'Leary and John Thompson finished back-to-back with scores of 84 and 85. MJ Myers completed the day with an 87.

The Varsity Gold Cats will duel University School on Saturday.

Another win for the JV Cats

The JV Cats continued to excel on Tuesday, besting Rocky River, 159-169.

Ethan Hughes did the best of the bunch, punching in a score of 38 at Big Met. Michael Van Etten turned in a great 9-hole score of 40, as did the ever-reliable Charlie Medvin. Domenic Pilla rounded out the scores with a 41.

Tom Bogen and his youngsters will return to the course on Thursday at Sleepy Hollow.
