Putka repped the Mat Cats well in Columbus.

The postseason is here for the Wildcats' swimming & diving and bowling teams, and is rapidly approaching for basketball, hockey, and wrestling squads.

The weekend bore great results for the men of Ohio City this weekend overall, so we have plenty of Wildcats to highlight.

As always, the Magis Athletes of the Week are presented by the Carfagna Family Magis Athletic Center.

Basketball – Shondo Green, Jr.

In the final game before having season-ending surgery, Shondo Green, Jr. went off.

The sophomore led the JV Cats to a big win on Friday. On the road, the JV squad overcame a tough St. Edward team, 63-59.

Green played perhaps his best basketball of the season on Friday. Green roared to a hot start in Lakewood. The talented forward scored 8 of the Cats' 19 points in the first quarter, firing home two 3-pointers and a short jumper.

Green continued to have a hot hand in the second quarter. The 6'4, 215-pound ripped off 9 more points in the second stanza, showcasing his great skills.

In the second half, he cooled off a bit, but still scored 4 points to finish off his outstanding day with 19 points.

Green has a bright future for the Wildcats. This hard-working young man is going places.

Hockey – Ryce Federle '20

I've gotten to know and cover many of Saint Ignatius student-athletes in this gig, and I can say honestly that Ryce Federle is one of my favorites.

Ryce is a complete student-athlete for the Ice Cats. Ryce is studious in the classroom, hard-working in the weight room, a tireless skater on the ice, and also possesses a wry sense of humor.

On Friday, Federle achieved a big first. The senior scored his first career goal with the Wildcats.

With Saint Ignatius trailing in the second period against Trenton, 2-0, Federle provided a much-needed spark. Off a faceoff, Millet fed the puck back to the senior blueliner. Federle wasted little time in firing a wrist shot past the goalie in impressive fashion. Suddenly, the deficit was halved to 2-1. The Wildcats would later tie it at 4-4, losing the game in a shootout, though the result counts as a tie.

Federle's goal was clutch for the Wildcats, and it was also pretty to watch. If you missed the goal, you can watch it here.

Federle is a smart kid with a bright future. As of right now, he's planning on a career in sports. If he keeps grinding and working, he's going big places. But first, he'll look to finish the season strong. And after that, you'll hear him on the SIBN during lacrosse season, broadcasting with his trademark enthusiasm and insight as he did during soccer season.

Swimming & Diving – Kian Carmichael '20

The Wildcats thrived at the Sectional Meet on Saturday, and Kian Carmichael played a big part in it.

The senior qualified for the District Meet in four events – the 200 individual medley, the 100 free, the 200 free relay, and the 400 free relay.

Carmichael began his success-filled Saturday with a nice swim in the 200 IM. The Westlake native clocked in at 2:01.60, good enough for third place. Carmichael helped the Clevelanders sweep the race with a 1-2-3 finish.

In his second individual event, Carmichael performed just as well. In the 100 free, the senior touched the wall at :48.47, snagging fifth place for the Wildcats.

Carmichael also proved to be key in his two relays. First, he teamed up with Micah Murtha, Will Van de Walle, and John Soeder in the 200 free. The quartet combined for a winning time of 1:28.08, a solid time for the Sectional Meet.

And the veteran finished things off right in the 400 free. Carmichael worked with Tyler Hong, Murtha, and Joe Richmond to snatch the top time in the event at 3:12.08. The Wildcats' quartet beat the field by a full five seconds.

Carmichael and the Cats will compete at Bowling Green State University on Saturday at Districts.

Wrestling – Ryan Putka '23

While the Saint Ignatius varsity wrestling squad was competing at the Team State Duals Regional Tournament, several Wildcats headed to Columbus.

The Wildcats sent a contingent to the Scioto Freshmen All-State Tournament. Amongst that cohort, three freshmen placed. Ryan Putka led the way.

The first-year Cat starred at 113 pounds. "The Animal" starred in the prestigious tournament, rolling through the competition.

All season long, Putka has endeared himself to teammates and coaches with his relentless work ethic and tenacity. Yes, there's a reason they call him "Animal."

Putka entered the weekend with a 13-5 record, 17 takedowns, 5 nearfalls, and 6 pins for a total of 50 team points. In short, he's been great for the Wildcats.

And the best part is that Putka has a bright future in front of him.
