McLaughlin is the latest in a long line of outstanding Wildcats soccer players.

In an announcement that comes as no surprise to Saint Ignatius fans, Matthew McLaughlin is an All-American.

On Wednesday, the United Soccer Coaches announced its 2019 Fall High School All-America Teams. McLaughlin represented the Wildcats on the squad.

McLaughlin enjoyed a special senior season, winning just about every award possible, including the Greater Cleveland Player of the Year and Academic All-Ohio. With the exception of the state and national championship trophies, this honor may mean the most.

With All-American status, McLaughlin is among the cream of the crop. Just 72 boys soccer players from around the country receive All-American status. It's an honor reserved for the best of the best.

Without a doubt, McLaughlin is the best of the best.

The senior played an integral role for the Wildcats in a 21-0-2 state and national championship campaign. Every step of the way, McLaughlin led the team, on and off the field. The stat sheet reflects his contributions. The Broadview Heights native topped the team with 15 assists and notched 18 goals, second only to Everett Shorey with 30.

An ironman player, McLaughlin started all 23 games, logging 1,539 minutes. His 51 points is another impressive marker for the senior.

For his career, McLaughlin walks away as the leading assist man in school history, with 48. The captain also tallied 54 goals, racking up 156 points in 4 seasons with the varsity team. He finishes his career with 77 starts, 88 appearances, and 5,332 minutes. His body of work is simply spectacular.

In addition, McLaughlin shined in the classroom. The star student has a 4.2 cumulative GPA. It's no wonder he's headed to the University of Notre Dame next fall.

Before he does, McLaughlin will look to enjoy the rest of his time at Wildcat High and the rewards of being an All-American. First, he'll play in the High School All-American Game this Saturday in Florida. And then in January, he'll be recognized at the All-America Ceremony & Reception at the Baltimore Convention Center (in conjunction with the 2020 United Soccer Coaches Convention).

Congrats, Matthew!
