Williamson helped the Golf Cats reach the state tourney.

All across the board, the Wildcats enjoyed a heap of success this past week.

The Golf Cats punched a ticket to the State Tournament. The Soccer Cats bested the No. 1 team in the country. The Football Cats routed the No. 12 ranked squad in Florida. The Cross Country Cats wrapped the regular season with a second-place showing at Legends Meet.

It was tough to just pick one athlete in all of the sports, that's for sure.

Here are your Magis Athletes of the Week, as presented by Carfagna Family Magis Athletic Center.

Cross Country – Elliot Rodstrom '20

In the final regular-season event of the season, Rodstrom enjoyed a breakout race.

The senior, who has split time between Varsity A and Varsity B this season, ran with his hair on fire. Rodstrom has enjoyed solid times this year, tallying a PR of 17:08 in Tiffin and then beating it with a 17:04 two weeks later at the Meet of Champions. He shattered both times on Saturday.

In a crowded field of 205 runners at the Trumbull County Fairgrounds, Rodstrom stormed past much of the field. The talented senior turned in a time of 16:48, besting his previous mark by an outstanding 16 seconds!

Rodstrom is a relentless worker, both in cross country and in the classroom. His work certainly off in spades on Saturday.

Rodstrom and his teammates will have two weeks to train before starting their postseason journey at the District Meet on October 19.

Football – Emmett Hanna '21

Any number of Wildcats might have found themselves in this spot this week. But with an excellent effort at safety, Emmett Hanna earns this spot.

In a 42-7 win over Rockledge, Hanna played a major role in slowing the Raiders' offense. Perhaps no defender performed as well as Hanna, at least on the stat sheet.

The junior safety tallied 10 tackles, including nine solo tackles. The 6'2, 200-pound defensive back made his presence felt all over the field, pouncing on the ballcarrier and preventing any deep passing plays.

Thanks in part to Hanna's efforts, Rockledge managed just 3.6 yards per carry and just 101 yards through the air.

Hanna will play a large role on Saturday. The starting safety will be charged with helping the Wildcats to slow a hard-charging St. Edward offense built on the run and playaction pass.

Golf – Ross Williamson '20

We might have chosen Andrew Kaye here for his marvelous effort on Monday. But Williamson has quietly shined all season.

Outside of the spotlight, the senior has provided great scores for the Wildcats. Often serving as the No. 3 or No. 4, Williamson has consistently turned in solid scores without seeing much time in the limelight.

The senior did the trick again this week. After tying for medalist honors at the Sectional Tournament, Williamson carded a 73 for the Wildcats at the District Tournament. His sterling effort provided a nice base for the Wildcats, placing him second on a very talented District Champ squad.

A humble young man, Williamson is the epitome of a smart, hard-working Wildcat, and not just on the course. Williamson was recently named a National Merit Commended Scholar for an outstanding score on the PSAT. His great work in the classroom and the course has not gone unnoticed.

Soccer – Everett Shorey '20

What a difference Everett Shorey makes.

In the last two years, the Wildcats have been missing a little something. Exiting the playoffs in the State Semifinals, the Wildcats have lacked that extra spark.

This year, the Wildcats have that extra sparkplug – his name is Everett Shorey, and he's a major reason the Wildcats are undefeated.

After battling injuries the last few seasons, Shorey is healthy and contributing in a major way. The talented forward has scored goals all season, particularly at the most crucial junctures. Shorey tallied a critical goal against St. Benedict's Prep, and provided both goals this weekend against No. 1 Peoria Notre Dame.

Shorey's tallies provided the margin of victory on Friday vs. a very talented Notre Dame squad. Shorey's heroics again came to the fore on Saturday, as his early goal against Chicago St. Ignatius Prep supplied the game-winning marker.

Shorey has been a force of nature this season, with 17 goals. His efforts up front have been absolutely crucial in powering the Wildcats to a 12-0-2 record. With Shorey at forward, the Wildcats are in great shape heading into the final two matches of the regular season.
