Peter Van Euwen notched his fourth shutout of the year on Saturday.

New for the 2019-20 school year, Saint Ignatius Athletics is unveiling a new feature – the Magis Athlete of the Week.

Each week, coaches and the Athletic Department will select one outstanding student-athlete per sport to highlight.

The Magis Athletes of the Week are brought to you by the Carfagna Family Magis Athletic Center.

Without further ado, here are the inaugural Magis Athletes of the Week!

Cross Country: Pete Fitzpatrick '21

We could have picked any one of several Saint Ignatius cross country runners. A host of Wildcats notched personal records (PRs) on an action-packed Saturday afternoon for the Cross Country Cats.

But Pete Fitzpatrick might have demonstrated the most improvement for the Wildcats. On Saturday at the Tiffin Carnival Race at Hedges Boyer Park, Fitzpatrick's work and effort in offseason showed in his time on a tough course. The junior shaved over a minute off his best time from last year. Fitzpatrick clocked in at 16:22, an extraordinary improvement from last season. His effort drew praise from Head Coach Doc Gallagher '71, and deservedly so.

Kudos to Pete on putting in the work in the offseason to get better.

Golf: Andrew Kaye '20

The young guns in the Saint Ignatius golf program have drawn plenty of praise early in the season, but the team's veteran leader deserves praise, too.

Andrew Kaye has been a steady leader and a mentor for the talented young members in the program. For that, Kaye earns the distinction of the first Magis Athlete of the Week for golf.

Kaye's leadership skills are not the only reason for his recognition. Kaye has been excellent on the course all season, scoring at or under par in just about every tournament he's participated in at the halfway point of the season. Kaye helped to lead the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish at the Kiely Cup this weekend. The Golf Cats fell behind on Sunday, but thanks in part to Kaye's strong play, the Wildcats enjoyed a very good day on Monday and climbed to fourth in the standings amidst a tough field.

Kaye will be critical down the stretch in anchoring the Wildcats.

Football: Connor Cmiel '20

Need we say more?

In case you missed it, Connor Cmiel tore up the field at Jerome T. Osborne Sr. Stadium on Friday. In one of the most impressive performances by a Saint Ignatius football player in some time, Cmiel returned three kicks for touchdowns – an 85-yard kickoff return, an 80-yard blocked field goal return, and an 80-yard kickoff return that was negated by a block in the back.

And beyond his special teams skills, Cmiel caught a 47-yard pass late in the fourth quarter to drive the Wildcats deep into Mentor territory for a potential game-winning drive.

And on defense, Cmiel also played significant time at cornerback. He tallied one tackle against the Cardinals.

To make a long story short, Connor Cmiel is electric. If you haven't seen the Wildcats play yet, be sure to head to Archbishop Hoban this week or to the team's home opener on September 28. Watching Cmiel play is more than worth the price of admission.

Soccer: Peter Van Euwen '20

Speaking of electric players, goalkeeper Peter Van Euwen is an outstanding player for the Soccer Cats.

Just like Connor Cmiel, Van Euwen makes a huge impact for his team, and is committed to The Ohio State University.

Van Euwen has been a star since his debut on the varsity team, but he's shining brighter than ever early on in the 2019 season. Opponents have experienced great difficulty in scoring on Van Euwen. The senior captain has limited six opponents to just two goals this season, and one of those came on a miscommunication. In other words, an opposing team has beaten him just once all year.

The star goalie faced the No. 25 ranked team in the country on Saturday – Louisville St. Xavier – and stoned them cold with clutch saves. Van Euwen turned away several promising Tigers' shots to keep the sheet clean in a 5-0 win on Saturday. On the year, that gives Van Euwen four shutouts.

Van Euwen has also proven himself in the classroom as a star student. The senior has a cumulative GPA of 4.4, an impressive accomplishment for a busy student-athlete.

Congrats to Fitzpatrick, Kaye, Cmiel, and Van Euwen on jobs well done. If you see them this week, be sure to congratulate them on a fine weekend.
