Wednesday, August 7 will be a day not soon forgotten by the Wildcats.

The Saint Ignatius varsity golf team made history at the Shale Creek Golf Course on Wednesday, setting a school record with a team score of 287.

In the process of making history, the Wildcats won the Walker Jones Classic. Andrew Kaye earned medalist honors, too, tallying a score of 69. 

Not a bad day on the course.

Entering Wednesday's match, head coach PJ Myers '99 decided to rest a few of his veterans to prepare for a trip to Cincinnati this weekend. Great competition provided a wonderful proving ground for many of the team's youngsters. The Wildcats stepped up in a big way. 

Andrew Kaye led the way for the squad. The senior enjoyed his best performance of the young season, shooting a 69. Kaye is drawing attention from Division I programs, and rightfully so. The talented vet showcased his skills on a course that features a majority of Par 4s and a handful of Par 5s. Kaye's score of 69 secured his spot as the medalist. 

Topher Reed did not finish as the medalist for the first time this season, but he wasn't far behind. The stud sophomore scored a 70, only one stroke behind Kaye. Reed continued his early-season tear, a wonderful streak of near-flawless golf.

Wednesday's revelation was the incredible play of two freshmen – Nick Piesen and Connor Malicki. 

Piesen entered as a heralded freshman and has done well. Piesen's great start continued with his magnificent performance on Wednesday. The young phenom tallied a score of 74, showing off his special skills and potential.

Malicki followed up his excellent effort on his home course on Tuesday with an even better effort on Wednesday. The first-year Wildcat marked a 74 at Shale Creek, showcasing his high ceiling. 

Ross Williamson matched their efforts, also hitting a 74. The senior's excellent score is an indicator of his talent and experience. When Williamson is on, he can make a huge difference for the Cats.

Andrew Martin rounded out the pack with a 77. The junior will move between varsity and JV gold this season, but Martin could play varsity on most area teams. His nice score of 77 demonstrates the depth the Wildcats are blessed with this season.

All of these low scores were not carded against easy competition. Eight teams of the 14 teams notched scores of 306 or lower. 

The Wildcats will certainly have more stiff competition this weekend. The Golf Cats will head to the St. Xavier Tournament at Maketewah CC on Saturday at 2 pm. The Bombers finished second on Wednesday with a mark of 292.
