Camden Kurtz scored a couple highlight reel goals in the victory.

The postseason is off to a rousing start for the Saint Ignatius varsity lacrosse team.

The Wildcats tore past the Cleveland Heights Tigers on Tuesday, 18-2. The Lax Cats stormed to a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back in the second round OHSAA Region 2 Tournament victory.

With the win, the Wildcats advance to the Regional Quarterfinal. The squad will host the Green Bulldogs on Friday at 7 pm on Wasmer Field.

Michael Boehm led the scoring for the Wildcats, touching twine early and often. The junior opened the scoring and tallied a hat trick by the end of the first quarter. Jack Moriarity and Merick Hartley also contributed tallies, with Christian Radke and Charlie Kinzel notching assists. Boehm finished the scoring in the opening session with a beauty with 3 seconds left.

The second quarter featured many great goals and moments. Joey Morford found the back of the net for the first time this season, scoring unassisted on a breakaway goal. Nate Conry penciled in a goal just a couple minutes later before Camden Kurtz scored the goal of the game. Cutting to the net, Kurtz received a pass from Radke. Kurtz used an amazing move to open space and scored behind the back to advance the lead.

Kinzel, Mort, and Griff "Biggie" Gerard added to the mounting lead with goals. Jack Welcsh got some action, too, providing an assist on Boehm's sixth goal, not long after winning a faceoff.

Owen Lang scored for the Tigers at 3:57, but Chris Laska played an otherwise stellar game in net, saving two shots. At the end of the first half, the Wildcats owned a commanding 15-1 lead on the scoreboard, along with a 31-11 advantage in ground balls, 23-4 margin in shots, and a 16-1 record at X for faceoffs.

The Lax Cats eased off the gas pedal in the second half, with a running clock rolling. The hosts played a number of young players, including Logan Rechin in net, Michael Mattimore, Kyu Shim, Max Hartley, Jack Dunstan, and others. The second half was one of firsts.

Gerard and Matt Kempton scored the lone goals in the third. Drew Wynocker tallied his first varsity goal on a Connor Francz assist, his first of the 2019 campaign. Senior Daniel Lewis scored for the Tigers, setting the final margin at 18-2.

The Lax Cats will host Friday's Regional Quarterfinal vs. Green at 7 pm on Wasmer Field. The SIBN will have an audio-only broadcast, per OHSAA rules.
