Matt Ferritto knocked in a two-run single.

One of the most important weeks of the season started out well for the Wildcats on Monday.

The Saint Ignatius varsity baseball team earned a blowout victory over the Midview Middies, 16-3, at home at Baldwin Wallace's Fisher Field.

The Wildcats emptied the bench on Monday, as a total of 18 members of the team played, with 16 players receiving an at-bat. The result was a complete team win.

After Midview plated one run in the first, the Wildcats' offense went to work in the second inning.

Flynn Lenahan and Austin Jones started the fun with back-to-back doubles. Matt Geraci and Jake Lang then drew back-to-back walks, setting the stage for Erik Daugenti. The junior poked a single to left to grab the lead for the Cats. AJ Gaich walked a run home and Jack Whelan grounded out to plate another. After a Michael Holdsworth walk, Gaich scored on a wild pitch and Holdsworth advanced to third. Michael McNamara finished off the 7-run inning with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Holdsworth.

The Saint Ignatius machine churned out another huge inning in the third after Midview scored an unearned run in the top of the frame. Austin Jones kickstarted the party with a walk, followed by a Geraci RBI double. Lang reached based on a hard grounder, scoring Geraci. Daugenti and Whelan kept things rolling with singles, filling the bases for Matt Ferritto. The senior walked, scoring Leo Eyink, a pinchrunner for Lang. Gabe Nard then checked in, singling to left to bring home Daugenti. Mac Boyle reached on an error in left, scoring Whelan. The craziness ended after Matt Giberti grounded into a fielder's choice, which scored Ferritto, and another ground out.

Ahead 13-2, the Wildcats went to the bullpen in Nick Fletcher after Connor Mays provided three good innings. Fletcher quickly found himself in a bases juiced jam with no outs, but emerged nearly unscathed, allowing only one run.

The Wildcats responded with more runs in the fourth. Leo Eyink started the inning with a double. Justin Sekerak then received his first at-bat of the year, but could not generate a hit. Sean Wracher did reach base in his plate appearance on a hit by pitch that followed a Danny Castenir walk. With the bases loaded, Nard and Ferritto tallied back-to-back RBI singles. Mac Boyle finished the scoring with a groundout to score Wracher and cement the score at 16-3.

Fletcher finished off the Middies in the top of the fifth, taking care of business in quick fashion.

With the win, the Wildcats advance to 15-8-1 on the season. The Baseball Cats return to action on Wednesday, hosting Mentor for a regular season contest. The Wildcats' postseason journey starts on Thursday, versus the winner of Tuesday's John Marshall vs. Valley Forge Sectional Semifinal.
