Lax Cats’ challenging game slate features top teams in Ohio, California

There will be very little rest for the Saint Ignatius lacrosse team once the games begin this spring.

Regular season contests are highlighted by the team’s spring break trip to Southern California, games versus Ohio stalwarts Upper Arlington and St. Xavier, and a rematch versus Everest Academy (Ont.), which will visit Wasmer Field for the second straight year.

The Wildcats will begin their season versus Solon in the Krenzler Dome at Cleveland State University this Sunday, March 18 at 9 am.  The unique early morning start kicks off a great day of lacrosse in Cleveland, which gives the Lax Cats the opportunity to play on the CSU turf before the Vikings take the field against the storied Duke Blue Devils at 1 pm.  The latter contest will pit two of the Wildcat coaches against each other given the close program ties of Coach Cintron, who was an assistant coach for the Vikings last year, and Coach Micklitsch, who played collegiately for Duke.

The Cats take the field for their first game on the home Wasmer turf on Tuesday, March 20 at 7:30 pm versus University School.  Then, only a week into the regular season, the Cats head to Columbus for a March 24 showdown versus Upper Arlington.  Upper Arlington won the 2016 state championship against the Wildcats and also won an overtime nail-biter in Ohio City last season.

After another evening home game on Wasmer versus North Canton Hoover on Wednesday, March 28, the Cats depart for their spring break trip to San Diego and Los Angeles Friday, March 30.  The Cats play Saturday 3/31 on Coronado Island versus Coronado High School, then again Monday, April 2 versus Torrey Pines, the No. 1 ranked team in the West Region per the Under Armour/Inside Experts Poll. The Lax Cats will finish up the West Coast swing against their fellow Jesuit brothers of Loyola Academy in Los Angeles on Wednesday, April 4 before hopping on the red-eye home to Cleveland that night.

The Cats get back to work on Sunday, April 8 at home versus Hamburg High School of New York before starting a 3-game stretch versus local competition.

During that local stretch, Western Reserve Academy comes to Ohio City on Wednesday, April 11, the Cats travel to Lakewood to take on rival St. Edward Saturday, April 14, and then head to Shaker Heights for a game versus the Red Raiders on Wednesday, April 18.

A very challenging 4-game slate follows, starting with a Friday, April 20 night game in which the Cats and Bombers from St. Xavier will meet in Columbus.  The team then must gear up for a rematch on Monday, April 23 against a stout Everest Academy program, which travels down to Cleveland from outside of Toronto.  Only one day of rest separates the Cats from their next game against Hudson on Wednesday, April 25, again on Wasmer.  The Lax Cats finish a busy week with a visit from Hartland (MI) Saturday, April 28.

The regular season wraps up with Senior Night on Wednesday, May 2 against Massilon Jackson, before the Cats begin the postseason with the MSCLA Tournament and OHSAA playoffs.

On the demanding schedule and playing teams from 5 different states/provinces, Head Coach Gary Cintron said, “We want the boys to be challenged every time they step on the field. We believe it is important to give them to opportunity to represent Saint Ignatius Lacrosse against the best in the state and also push their limits against competition from across North America.”
