Aqua Cats Dominate at Sectionals; Look Forward to Districts Next Weekend

The Saint Ignatius Swimming and Diving Team headed to the familiar Cleveland State University pool this past Saturday for the Sectional Championships. 

Notching top finishes all across the board, the ‘Cats qualified a sizable contingent of swimmers and divers for next Saturday’s Northwest District Championship. 

Tyler Hong led the way for the ‘Cats with first-place finishes in all of his individual and relay events. In the 200 Individual Medley Relay, Hong, in addition to finishing in first, posted a time of 1:51.48, a sectional record. Right behind him was fellow freshman Zach Toothman, who finished second with a time of 2:02.46. Hong impressed again by taking first place and breaking the Sectional record in the 100 backstroke (0:50.67). 

Swimmers Cian O’Haimhirgin, Joseph Richmond, and Nick Hong also contributed to the ‘Cats success. O’Haimhirgin finished first in both the 50 freestyle (0:21.91) and the 100 freestyle (0:47.88). Richmond took first in the 500 freestyle (4:52.60) and second in the 200 freestyle (1:48.26). Junior Nick Hong took home gold in the 100 breaststroke (0:59.46). 

In addition to the individual events, three relay teams secured a spot at the District Championships. The 200 Medley Relay Team, composed of Tyler Hong, Nick Hong, John Libertin, and Cian O’Haimhirgin, finished first with a time of 1:36.72. The 400 Freestyle Relay Team (Tyler Hong, Kian Carmichael, John Soeder, Cian O’Haimhirgin) and the 200 Freestyle Relay Team (Kian Carmichael, Daemyen Haywood, Thomas Metz, John Soeder) also took first with times of 3:14.88 and 1:30.50, respectively. 

Four divers: William Claus, Alex Claus, Kian Carmichael, and Noah Keim; made the cut this past Saturday and will be competing at the District Championships. William Claus led the pack with a score of 465.55, Alex Claus finished second with 455.90, Kian Carmichael took fifth with 326.85, and Noah Keim finished seventh with a score of 294.05.

The Catfish will return to the pool Saturday, February 17 at Bowling Green State University for the District Championships.
