Whipkey pinned two opponents last weekend.

The Saint Ignatius varsity wrestling team has enjoyed a great start to the 2017-18 season, and burst into the new year with two wins last Saturday.

As a result, a Mat Cat is this week's Student-Athlete of the Week. The honoree is Matthew Whipkey.

The junior ripped off two victories last Saturday on the road. Whipkey pinned his opponents from Padua and Archbishop Hoban, earning 12 points for the Wildcats in the tri-match. Thanks in part to Whipkey's efforts, the Wildcats ended the day with victories over the Bruins and Knights.

On the season, Whipkey has a 14-7 record, with 7 of his wins coming via pin. Whipkey has notched 67 team points on the year, fourth best on the team in that category, behind only Logan Toth, Johnny Novak, and Tommy Gill.

This weekend, Whipkey and the Mat Cats will face some of the toughest challenges yet this season. Twenty-eight Catholic schools from across the state will send their best wrestlers to Ohio City for the 57th annual Catholic Invitational Tournament. For the first time ever, Saint Ignatius will serve as hosts.

Congrats to Whipkey on the honor, and best of luck to the Mat Cats this weekend!

Author's Note: Head Coach Mark Sullivan, Associate Coach Jon Polick, and the wrestling coaching staff have put in countless hours of work to make this tournament a reality. Thank you to them for all of their hard work and dedication with the CIT.
