Jake Moraca '19 enjoyed another great day on the course.

The still-young golf season looks promising for the Saint Ignatius golf squad.

The Wildcats successfully hosted the annual Saint Ignatius Invitational at Red Tail Golf Course in Avon today.

The hosts finished third among a 21-team field with a team mark of 301, nine strokes better than yesterday. However, the mark was not enough for the top spot, as St. Xavier played the spoiler. The Bombers took the tournament with an impressive team score of 292. Columbus St. Charles placed second with a 298.

The invitational received a blessing from Mother Nature, as the sun kissed the course, but did not scorch the golfers. A cool breeze helped, too.

The tournament went off without a hitch, thanks to the efforts of Head Golf Coach Brian Becker '77, Tournament Director Dan Hess '88, Assistant Athletic Director Brad Ganor, and JV Gold Coach Tom Beach.

Jake Moraca highlighted the efforts of the Wildcats. After winning the CVCA Invitational yesterday, the junior finished second with an even par of 72, improving yesterday's performance by four strokes.

Michael McCaffrey also performed well. The lefty used several strong chips to finish with a 73, receiving praise from Coach Becker after one nice shot on the front nine.

Andrew Kaye took third for the Wildcats with a 76. Ross Williamson notched an 80, while Nick Longano rounded out the varsity sqaud with an 86.

The Bombers, as mentioned above, traveled well from Cincinnati. Oscar Zimmerman earned the medal with a three-under-par 69. Cameron Frazier stole the spotlight, though. The senior, who finished with a 74, sank a hole-in-one on the eighth hole from 161 yards out.

The Wildcats' JV Gold squad also competed today at Red Tail. Ryan Grabowski, Connor Warns, and KJ Ripich each tabbed a 79. Jess Saunders shot an 83, while John Klym tabbed an 86. The "Saint Ignatius Varsity B" earned a team score of 320. Zach Hazard (73) and Kyle Gerrity (87) golfed as Saint Ignatius extras.

The Varsity Golf Cats return to action tomorrow, traveling to Medina for the Walker Jones Classic. The JV Gold Cats are off until they face University School on Monday.

The date for next year's invitational is already tentatively set. Mark your calendars for August 7, 2018!
