The Mat Cats will host the Catholic Invitational Tournament for the first time.

The Mat Cats enjoyed an excellent 2016-17 campaign, and with only a few seniors lost to graduation, the 2017-18 season looks bright.

The Saint Ignatius wrestling team's schedule is complete, bringing more anticipation to Ohio City.

Some matchups remain the same, such as an early season home opener against Madison and Strongsville. But one change lies in the heart of the schedule. Saint Ignatius will host the Catholic Invitational Tournament on Saturday, January 13 and Sunday, January 14, 2018.

The Wildcats will host the 57th annual CIT, marking the first time in tournament history that Saint Ignatius has hosted the event. The prominent tournament will bring Catholic high schools from across the state to Sullivan Gym.

Last season, Otterbein University played host. The Wildcats finished third with 199.5 points. Junior DJ Huff (133) and Kaden Russell '17 (182) each won titles for the blue and gold, while Cal Miller '17 snagged second. Seniors Aidan Gill and Michael Drobnick earned third place finishes, qualifying for the State Tournament later in the season. Returning sophomore Matthew Whipkey also took bronze at the CIT.

Kudos to the Saint Ignatius wrestling coaching staff, including savvy head coach Mark Sullivan and outstanding assistant coach Jon Polick for playing a big part in attracting the tournament and handling all the details.

Another highlight of the schedule includes the nationally renowned Ironman Tournament at Walsh Jesuit High School. The Ironman will take place on Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9.

Also circled on the calendar is the annual showdown with St. Edward. The series shifts to Lakewood this year, with the Eagles playing host to the Mat Cats on Thursday, December 21 at 7:30 p.m.

The regular season campaign concludes with a home matchup with North Canton Hoover on Friday, February 9, 2018. The dual meet will be Senior & Alumni Night for the Wildcats.

All in all, the season looks to be a promising one for the Wildcats, full of competition and highlighted by the CIT. Only 115 days until the first day of practice on November 10!
