The phenomenal regular season of the Saint Ignatius volleyball team ended on Friday evening, giving way to what could be a special postseason for the Wildcats.

The Volleyball Cats dominated the St. Edward Eagles in Lakewood, winning via a sweep, 25-13, 25-15, and 25-13.

The key to the Wildcats' success on the road on Friday proved to be quick starts in each set.

The visitors fired out to a 12-3 start in the first set. The Eagles narrowed the margin to 14-9, but a 7-1 Saint Ignatius run set aside the Eagles' hopes in the first set. A resounding 16 kills, including six by Danny Michals, set the tone for the contest, in a 25-13 set win.

The second match started like the first, with the Wildcats grabbing a 7-1 advantage. The Eagles stayed within six for a time, before the Wildcats broke it open after taking an 18-9 lead. The Volleyball Cats held on for a critical set two victory, 25-15. Rich Holzheimer buoyed the Wildcats' efforts with 8 assists.

The Wildcats opened up an even larger than in the first to two sets to start the third. The Volleyball Cats looked nearly perfect in building a massive 17-1 lead. The Eagles battled back to finish with 13 points, but the Wildcats completed the sweep. Michals' 4 kills and Holzheimer's 5 assists highlighted an amazing set by the Wildcats.

With the Wildcats' triumph in the rearview mirror, postseason play begins on Tuesday. The Volleyball Cats will head to Walsh Jesuit to face Brunswick in the Regional Semifinals at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Should the Volleyball Cats best the Blue Devils, the Regional Final will be next Saturday at noon. If the Wildcats survive that match, the State Tournament will follow on June 3-4.

The Wildcats complete the regular season at 18-3.
