The effort to cure cancer is not over – it's not too late to donate!

"When you talk about the Prayer for Generosity, giving and not counting the cost, that's what this is."

That's how Mr. Jim Brennan '85 began his speech to assembled Wildcat kickballers at the 8th Annual Kevin Healey '07 Kick-it-for-Cancer Tournament on Sunday evening.

Thirteen teams of Saint Ignatius students and one team of Incarnate Word Academy students gathered at Wasmer Field to play kickball and to raise money to cure cancer.

By all measures, their efforts were successful. The students raised over $17,000 for cancer research, in the memory of Kevin Healey '07, who passed away in 2009 from cancer.

Tom Healey '77, Brennan, and Cathy Welcsh headed the fundraising effort, encouraging student involvement and spreading the word. Healey wrote a wonderful Lessons from Loyola story, which you can read by clicking here.

The tournament itself could not have been more successful. The 14 teams enjoyed competitive kickball and a great time. Close refereeing calls and instant replay were necessary at a couple points, but the teams played fairly and even for the tournament. Everyone enjoyed the laughs and fun that come with playing a childhood game.

In the end, five teams clinched a berth in the semifinals – Team Lee, Kicking Grass, University Hospital Powerhouse, Flamingo 6, and TD 49. The five teams will play on Class Competition Day on May 16.

Since the tournament is not over, it's not too late to donate! A dress-down day, Chipotle days, and other fundraisers are in the works – stay tuned! If you'd like to donate online, you can do so here.
