Saint Ignatius Crew performed well at the Dillon Lake Scholastic Sprints on Saturday, April 22, making big strides since the team’s first race two weeks ago. The regatta featured some of the top Midwest scholastic teams, including rival St. Edward, Upper Arlington, Saint Ignatius College Prep (Chicago), Canisius High School and Loyola Academy.

The Wildcats came out of the gate confident, racing well despite some unfriendly wind. They qualified to race in the finals for nine different races later in the day. Of those nine races, the Wildcats claimed medals in seven events.

Highlighting the team’s performance were the Junior 8, Lightweight 8 and Lightweight 4, which edged out the competition for a handful of gold medal wins.

The Varsity 4 and Freshman 8 each earned silver medals in incredibly tight racing.

The Junior 4, after two consecutive races, mustered the energy to claim a bronze medal. Following suit, the 2nd Varsity 8 placed third behind Loyola and Upper Arlington.

The Cats' top boat, the Varsity 8, finished fourth in the final as Upper Arlington, Upper Canada and St. Ed's wound up on the medal stand. While the loss hit the Cats hard, they feel confident in their ability to change the result when they return to Lake Dillon in three weeks for the Midwest Championship.

Next weekend, the team hosts Canisius for a joint practice and scrimmage. The Cats' next regatta is the St. Mary's Laddie Cup on May 6 in Orchard Lake, Michigan. You can follow the team on Twitter or Instagram @sihsrowing.
