Varsity Baseball in South Carolina

The Saint Ignatius varsity baseball team spent the last week in Charleston, SC getting a chance to play quality competition under beautiful conditions.  The Wildcats opened up on Monday with state power Bishop England and held on for a 1-0 win.  Senior Connor Adams (U. of Louisville) started the game and was tough to deal with for the Fighting Bishops.  Working within an early season pitch count, Connor threw 4.1 innings, striking out 7 and yielding 2 hits.  Senior Ryan Jacobs (Miami, OH) came up with the game winning hit in the 6th driving in Senior Joe Gutbrod who came on to run after Junior Tommy Grosel got things going with a base hit.  Junior Jack Eyink and Seniors Erik Demchuk and Danny Adler finished up the rest of the night keeping Bishop England off balance and off the score board.

The next 2 games didn’t yield the outcome the Cats had hoped for but certainly proved to be a learning experience in all areas of the game.  Defense was not the name of the game on Wednesday’s vs. another SC state power in Hanahan High School.  Multiple miscues led to 7 unearned runs as the Cats fell 7-1.  The final game of the trip on Thursday night saw some similar trends with miscues on the bases and in the field and although the bats were starting to settle in as Connor Adams had 2 hits along with Ryan Jacobs, Jack Eyink, Jeff Chonko and Drew Asadorian providing some offense, it wasn’t enough to make up for the early mistakes and the Cats fell 4-1.

As the bus heads home, the team and coaches have learned a lot about each other.  The trip was a huge success in many ways and as I told the team this week, it’s not about the first 3 games of the year; it’s about the last 8.  Back to work when we get home as we settle into the regular season.  The only hope was that we could bottle up some of that weather in South Carolina and bring it back home!

The Varsity Wildcats are back in action on Monday at 5pm hosting Cuyahoga Falls at Baldwin Wallace University.
