A special player deserves a special award.

Matt Davet has rightfully been named the Student-Athlete of the Week after accomplishing a feat few Saint Ignatius basketball players ever have.

Davet scored his 1,000th point in a Saint Ignatius uniform on Friday in the first half, joining a select few to score that many points in the blue and gold.

It's been an outstanding year for Davet, who is averaging over 20 points per game for head coach Brian Becker '77. Davet led the team to a 17-5 regular season record, including Friday's 76-65 win, in which Davet dropped 29 for the Wildcats.

“Kudos to Matt Davet. That’s a huge landmark in his career,” Coach Becker said after the game. "1,000 points is a big deal at Saint Ignatius, especially with the schedule that we play. We’re not playing bums. So we’re playing teams that are defending well, and he gets the best defensive player usually game in and game out."

The 6'7" senior has served as the heart and soul of the Wildcats, becoming the go-to guy when the team needs a point, rebound, or a boost.

"That’s what leaders do," Coach Becker said. "They come out and give solid basketball games.”

Davet is certainly a leader. Now, he begins his quest to lead the Wildcats back to Columbus.

Congratulations again to Davet and the basketball team on this achievement.
