As the Saint Ignatius hockey team has marched onto its fourth straight Cleveland Cup title, one student-athlete has quietly established himself as one of the best young players in the area.

The young goaltender has stood as a brick wall in net, buoying the Wildcats on defense and helping the team reach this point of the season.

That player is Benny Savarino, the Student-Athlete of the Week.

The sophomore stood tall for the Ice Cats during their Cleveland Cup run last week, allowing just three goals in three games. Savarino shut out Lake Catholic on Tuesday, 7-0, tabbing 19 saves. Then on Friday, Savarino turned away 25 Holy Name shots, allowing just one goal. And in his pièce de résistance, the young netminder stopped 24 St. Edward shots, allowing just two tallies in a 5-2 win in the title game.

Savarino has stepped in as the team's top goaltender this season after the graduation of three-year starter Dylan McKeon. Savarino has a 20-7-1 record on the year with a 1.94 goals against verage, a 91% save percentage, and four shutouts.

The sophomore and the rest of the hockey squad return to action on Saturday, playing either Normandy or Brecksville on Saturday at noon at Brooklyn Ice Arena.

Congratulations again to Savarino and the Ice Cats.
