It was a very good weekend for Saint Ignatius Varsity Blue Hockey, as the team won the Padua Holiday Classic Tournament for the first time ever.

The 'Cats went 3-1 on the weekend, culminating in a 7-3 win over Toledo St. Francis De Sales on Sunday.

The 'Cats opened up the tournament by beating Findlay, 9-3, led by a potent scoring attack of Connor Koehnke '17 with 4 goals and Seth Whitney '17 with 2 goals. Bain Kurtz added a powerplay goal and Adam Borsuk and Colin Allen scored their first varsity goals. Ryan Von Keyserling picked up his second varsity win with 10 saves.

The next morning, the 'Cats picked up another win over Columbus St. Charles, 7-2. Chris Revnew lit the lamp twice, Kurtz scored another goal, and Andrew Zedella scored on a powerplay. Mike McCaffrey scored his first of the weekend, and Andrew Denk and Danny Corrigan scored their first varsity goals. Nick Bernstein picked up the win.

The 'Cats suffered a 6-3 loss at the hands of Toledo St Francis on Saturday afternoon (goals by McCaffrey, Whitney, and Revnew), but by a narrow margin advanced to the championship round for a rematch against Toledo St. Francis.

This game was much different from the previous night's contest. The pace was set early, as sophomore stud goaltender Benny Savarino stopped a Knight scoring chance with a miraculous glove save, and kept the 'Cats in the game the whole way, featuring a flying blocker save.

On a 2-on-1 odd man rush early, Mike McCaffrey made a slick pass over the stick of defenseman Tim Organ Jr. of St. Francis directly to Connor McGowan, who finished the puck past Jake Coward to ignite the Wildcats' offensive attack and give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.

Moments later, quick junior Billy Baumann made a nice move behind the net and came out from behind on the Coward's blocker side and buried the puck home, 2-0 'Cats.

Soon thereafter, Chris Revnew continued his all-star weekend by adding on to the Wildcats lead. The Knights would add a goal before the conclusion of the first, but the 'Cats had a firm lead they wouldn't relinquish. Revnew added another goal on a hard shot that went five hole on the goalie, and Mike Eppich netted varsity goal #1 to give the 'Cats a 5-1 lead heading into the third period.

After another Knight goal, Mike McCaffrey had a textbook tip off a beautiful shot from deadbolting defensemen Steven Neff. Star senior Benji Rechin then added a goal for the 'Cats. A late Knights goal was too little too late, as Benny Savarino held off the potent Knight offense, led by Warren Nattyshak, as Savarino flashed his glove for twenty saves to pick up his seventh win on the season (275 saves on the season on 301 shots) to pick up his seventh win and push the team to a 11-4-0 record.

The ‘Cats GLHL schedule heats up through Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend as the weather cools down.
