Kavalec Named CoSIDA Academic All-America
Senior becomes just the third Academic All-America in team history
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Boston College senior defensive end Kevin Kavalec has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America second team, the organization announced on Thursday. Kavalec becomes just the third player in Boston College football history to be named an Academic All-American.
He joins an exclusive list of Eagles who have earned the tremendous honor joining first team Academic All-America selections Richard Scudellari in 1977 and Michael Degnan in 1986.
To be nominated for CoSIDA All-Academic Teams, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average at his current institution.
The Middleburg Heights, Ohio, native has recorded 50 tackles, including 13.5 tackles-for-loss in 12 starts this season. Kavalec tied a career high with 10 tackles at Virginia Tech on Sept. 17 and notched four solo tackles, including one TFL, in the win at Massachusetts on Sept. 10.
He ranks fifth on the team in tackles and leads all BC defensive linemen in tackles on the season with 50. He is second on the team in TFLs and among the team leaders with 3.5 sacks.
Boston College ranked as one of the nation’s top defenses the entire season. Currently, the Eagles rank ninth in the nation and second in the ACC in total defense allowing just 310.6 yards per game. BC has allowed just 106.9 rushing yards per game, sixth-best nationally and second in the conference.
BC is also among the top-20 defenses nationally in third down conversion percentage defense (12th, 31.9%), fourth down conversion percentage defense (17th, 36.4%), first down defense (9th, 184), fumbles recovered (10th, 12), sacks (10th, 3.25 per game), tackles-for-loss (15th, 7.7 per game) and turnovers gained (20th, 23).
An economics major in the Carroll School of Management, Kavalec was named Boston College's Junior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2015 and earned a spot on the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Team as a junior and sophomore. He has also garnered the Athletics Director's Award for Academic Achievement all three years of his BC career.
Boston College will find out its bowl destination Sunday, Dec. 4. It will be the 25th bowl appearance in school history and the 15th in the last 18 years for the Eagles.
